Microsoft has released a preview build of its Internet Explorer 10 web browser for Windows 7 users to try out.

The software came pre-loaded with the Windows 8 operating system, but a sample version is now available free for users who are yet to upgrade.

Nokia has promised its Here service will
bring top-end mapping features to budget phones when the Firefox OS launches.
Nokia has rebranded its mapping
application to be called Here and has worked with Mozilla to offer a suite of
features to the new OS when it arrives in 2013.
The new platform from the browser-maker is
designed to make rich web apps that can run on a variety of affordable phones,
and Nokia Here will provide free 'location experiences' to the OS.

All about the devs

Being able to offer location services is a
key part of any operating system, and with Firefox OS the tie-in with Here will
offer powerful tools for developers to play with.
However, the new OS is based on the HTML5
standard and runs on top of the Android structure, so the likes of Google Maps
will still be available as competition.
It's in the tools the new system provides
that the benefit comes in though, with both companies combining to integrate the
mapping data within the platform.
The first Firefox OS devices are expected
to launch in Brazil in January 2013, but will likely make their way to the UK
and US later in the year at a super-cheap level.

Behind every world's fastest supercomputer is a
high-performance visual processor, and in the case of the new Titan comp, that
GPU is the Nvidia Tesla K20X.

Nvidia's newly unveiled graphics
accelerator is part of the company's K20 line, which not only boasts the highest
performance, but also manages to be the most energy efficient.
With Titan packing 18,688 Tesla K20X GPU
accelerators, the newly crowned supercomputer has a performance record of 17.59
petaflops, or 17.59 quadrillion calculations per second.
"We are taking advantage of Nvidia GPU
architectures to significantly accelerate simulations," said Thomas Schulthess,
professor of computational physics at ETH Zurich and director of the Swiss
National Supercomputing Center in a press release.
According to the professor, such
simulations will benefit fields of climate and meteorology, seismology,
astrophysics, fluid mechanics, materials science and molecular biophysics.

All in the K20 family

The K20X, the flagship of Nvidia's Tesla
line, surpasses all other processors with 3.95 teraflops single-precision and
1.31 teraflops double-precision peak floating point performance.
Nvidia also unveiled the Tesla K20
accelerator, which delivers a strong performance of 3.52 teraflops of
single-precision and 1.17 teraflops of double-precision at peak.
Both the K20X and K20 are based on
Nvidia's Kepler compute architecture and have enabled more than 30 petaflops of
performance delivered in the last 30 days.
According to Nvidia, this is equivalent to
the computational performance of last year's 10 fastest supercomputers
combined.

The fastest, most efficient GPU for now

The Titan supercomputer, with the help of
the Nvidia K20X, took the top spot on Top 500's biannual list of the world's top
supercomputers this week.
However, with the way tech specs advance,
the Titan can be quickly knocked out of contention in six months.
It replaces the new No. 2, the IBM
Sequoia, which itself replaced the new No. 3, the Fujitsu's K computer.
In addition to appearing at the Oak Ridge
National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., where the Titan supercomputer is
located, K20 GPUs are going out to labs and universities worldwide.
Early customers in the U.S. include
Clemson University, Indiana University, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator
Facility, National Center for Supercomputing Applications, National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of
Southern California.
International locations King Abdullah
University of Science and Technology and Shanghai Jiao Tong University are also
destined to be part of the exclusive K20 GPU club.

A news summary app, developed by a 17-year-old Brit, leapt in to the App Store top ten just hours after it was launched.
The new Summly app, built by teenager Nick D'Aloisio, uses neat algorithms to condense trending news stories into one-screen summaries.
The iPhone app works on the premise that people do not have the time or the inclination to read full news articles on a mobile screen and would rather have the basic gist of a story, rather than skim headlines.
The 'painstakingly' developed algorithm means that despite all of the chopping, the story still translates into a readable summary, while users can still double-tapping the screen for a more detailed 'Summly'.

Mobile news is broken

The length of the Summly is also determined by the size of the iPhone model, so iPhone 5 users will see more text on their 4-inch screen than users of the 3.5-inch iPhone 4S.
"What we believed is news on the iPhone-sized screen is currently broken," D'Aloisio said.
"So people are just skim-reading the headlines and no one is actually standing in line or on the phone and going, 'I want to read this whole story,' scrolling through a 1,500-word article."

Big investment

Summly, which D'Aloisio took a year out of school to develop, has received over a million dollars in funding from the likes of actor Ashton Kutcher and Zynga CEO Mark Pincus.
News Corp. is also on board after signing a deal to have the Wall Street Journal, The Times and other publications appear within the app.
This is the second version of Summly. D'Aloisio says the first version was a demo, but this new iteration is ready for the mass market. Judging by the initial flood of downloads, it looks like he may be right.

The third version of Livescribe's voice-recording smartpen is taking your notes to the cloud. The Livescribe Sky
comes with either 2GB, 4GB or 8GB of storage on board, and automatically syncs
your notes wirelessly to cloud-based notes service Evernote.
The move to the cloud is not without
casualties, with Livescribe ditching its desktop software for the new pen, as
well as shifting away from on-pen applications.
Both will still be available for customers
using the Livescribe Echo smartpen.
To counter this, Livescribe has also
introduced the ability for the Sky device to pair directly to tablets like the
iPad using the pen's wireless functionality.

Evernote approached us

At the Australian launch event,
Livescribe's co founder Sasha Pesic explained that while doing research into
what cloud based services its customers used, Evernote was by far the most
popular, with almost 60 per cent using the service.
"Evernote approached us and said 'is there
something we can do together to provide added value to our respective customer
bases'," Pesic explained.
By partnering with Evernote, and launching
the Sky Wi-Fi smartpen, Livescribe wants to create an ecosystem of having
immediate access to notes wherever you are on any device.
All Sky smartpen users automatically get a
boost in Evernote storage to ensure they don't run out of free monthly space,
while customers who purchase the 8GB pro pack get a free year-long subscription
to Evernote Pro.

Cloud in the Sky

When the Sky pen is synced wirelessly
using a Livescribe notebook, the pen first sends the notes to the Livescribe
cloud before syncing with Evernote's servers.
This allows Livescribe to offer services
like handwriting recognition and print on demand functionality, according to
Pesic.
From there, a new HTML5 player offers
playback of the digital notes on all browsers, as well as mobile devices.
Livescribe has also launched an SDK, for
mobile app developers to create Livescribe functionality within apps.
Examples given were for apps that allow
real-time annotation on documents stored in the tablet, as well as the ability
to sign documents digitally.

Go anywhere and do anything using free remote access to any PC or Mac from LogMeIn Free. Live your life your
way - secure in the knowledge that you're never farther away from all your
information than the nearest internet connection.
How many times have you wished you could
just get your hands on your computer - whether to access a critical piece of
information, update a file, show a friend your most recent video or offer IT
support?
Well, with LogMeIn Free you can put that
feeling behind you forever. The application provides free remote access to any
PC or Mac through the cloud. So now you can get to all your information,
applications and files from anywhere, at any time, as long as there's an
internet connection.

Make the connection

Getting started is easy. Users first
download and install the free LogMeIn client software on each computer they want
to connect to. It doesn't matter if you own a desktop, a laptop or both, and it
works with all versions of Windows or Mac OS X.
From there, one simple website login is
all it takes to connect from any public or private computer, and access your
files, applications and media as if you were sitting in front of your remote
PC.
Making the connection is easy and doesn't
require the user to tinker with router preferences, port forwarding or other
messy network settings - it all "just works."
Best of all, LogMeIn can take advantage of
whatever internet connection is available - Wi-Fi or cellular, including 3G or
fast new 4G LTE data speeds.

Secure and efficient

Data security is always a concern whether
you're travelling or not. Users can feel safe knowing that LogMeIn takes
advantage of the same powerful 256-bit SSL encryption used by major online
banks, protecting you from initial log in until it's time to log off and call it
a day.
LogMeIn Free also includes the
ability to cut, copy and paste text between remote and local screens, map
keyboards so you'll be right at home on every computer you use and even supports
multiple monitor setups.

Go Pro

LogMeIn Pro takes the same great
experience available in the basic version, but adds an additional layer of
features squarely aimed at true road warriors.
File Manager makes it easy for users to
transfer large files or even entire folders between remote computers, where they
can be saved locally - perfect for making sure a forgotten presentation slide or
other document doesn't spoil your next big meeting.
Pro-enabled Windows and Mac computers also
enjoy HD video and audio streaming over any internet connection, and remote
files can even be printed locally with ease.
Available on Windows or Mac with an
annual, six-month or three-month in-app subscription upgrades for iOS, LogMeIn
Pro takes remote control of your computer to a whole new level.
Once that's done, you simply log in
through the LogMeIn website and access the remote computer. You'll feel like
you're sitting right in front of it no matter where you are and no matter what
you're doing.

Ultimate access

It turns out, all this freedom will make
you more productive since you are no longer 'away' from your computers. People
have used Free or Pro to provide support for
their friends and family, run their small business and to work from home.
Because it's not just about access. It's about accessibility.

It hasn't even been a year since the original Samsung Galaxy Note launched. It was a work of genius for old Samsung. Many (including us, we admit) were not convinced. Who on earth would want something so big to make their calls and surf the internet, even with a glorified stylus?

Cue awkward silence.

Millions of you, it would appear. The Samsung Galaxy Note has sold by the bucketload. And while it is most definitely a niche device, it's done wonders for Samsung's balance sheet. How do you follow that up? With something better, of course - the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

If you've ever fondled or caressed the original Samsung Galaxy Note and found its larger size too much to handle, we'll break this to you with a sledgehammer - the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is bigger.

It's now 151.1 x 80.5 x 9.4mm (5.9 x 3.2 x 0.4 inches), so slightly up from 146.9 x 83 x 9.7mm (5.8 x 3.3 x 0.4 inches). That said, we didn't find it cumbersome at all.

In the way the original Samsung Galaxy Note followed the Samsung Galaxy S2's square design, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 follows the Samsung Galaxy S3's more rounded rectangular look.

And what a beauty it is. It actually felt slightly smaller to us in day-to-day use - but that may be down to the fact that we have gravedigger hands.

The Samsung Galaxy Note had a frankly amazing screen as it was, so would have taken some beating. But Samsung clearly likes a challenge. The size has gone up slightly from 5.3 inches to 5.5. And although pixel density is reduced, we didn't notice it.

This is the bright, vivid Samsung Super AMOLED panel that we all know and love - and what a beauty it is, replicating colours amazingly and immaculately.

As expected, that screen takes up most of the front. You get a home button and two hidden soft keys beneath it as before, plus a front-facing camera and sensors up top.

The handset itself has little to note (geddit?) around the edges. A headphone jack up top, power button on the right, volume on the left and charger port below, right alongside the S-Pen slot - more of which will follow later.

Around the back, you'll find the 8MP camera with flash.

The additional sorcery is carried out away from view. The microSD expansion slot is beneath the rear cover - as is the microSIM slot, hidden behind the enormous 3,100 mAh battery.

And there's a whole lot of goodness even further inwards than that: HSDPA (LTE if you're extra lucky), NFC, GPS, Wi-Fi and so forth. It's a veritable treasure trove of geekdom.

One other thing we'd say is that this does feel like a quality Android smartphone/tablet. We're aware of the protestations by some readers (particularly iPhone users) that phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 feel like toys because they're so light and plasticky.

At 183g (0.4lbs), you couldn't describe the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 as a feather - and the weight gives it a real notion of substance.

If you want to pick one of these big boys up, you'll need to be willing to part with some serious cash - around £530/AU$999/US$700 appears to be the average SIM-free price. It is also available on contract, but be willing to shovel top dollar each month in the network's direction for two years.

Normally, this is where we'd talk about the alternatives on offer. But we admit, we're stumped here. Why? Well, in our mind, there is no clear rival. The Samsung Galaxy Note created its own category, in that there were no real phablets about before.

There is the LG Optimus Vu, which hasn't hit the UK, but is in the US under the moniker LG Intuition, however it's 4:3 ratio screen makes it an extremely odd proposition.

According to a post on NikonRumors, information suggests that the new camera will be ready for order and pick up at the end of January, meaning it would be available before Canon's EOS 1DX which was announced earlier in the year, but is only expected to be available in February next year.
January sees the PMA at CES 2012 show, a large electronics show based in Las Vegas, which could be the perfect opportunity for Nikon to unveil its latest camera.

Specifications
The Nikon D4 has been anticipated for some time, with speculation around features building for several months. One thing that is repeatedly rumoured is a 36 million pixel "tweaked" Sony full-frame sensor.
It's not yet known whether the D4 will be split into two lines, as the D3 was split into the D3s and D3x, or whether the camera will be a replacement for both models, in the same vein as Canon's 1DX merging the 1D Mark IV and 1Ds Mark III lines.
It's also a possibility that the D4 won't be the D4 at all. The number four is unlucky in Japan, sounding close to the word for "death". Other manufacturers have skipped the number altogether in the past, so it'll be interesting to see whether Nikon follows suit.
Nokia may be preparing to release the rumoured Nokia Lumia 900 in February 2012, after a telecoms operator appeared to confirm the smartphone on Twitter.

Swiss operator Swisscom responded to a tweeted question from a customer, who asked about the expected launch timeline for the "Nokia Lumia 800 or 900".

Engadget reports that the company's customer care team responded by saying that the "900" would be released at the "end of Feb", despite Nokia having not yet confirmed the handset.

The slip may just be a genuine mistake, but it follows a developer video posted briefly on YouTube that seemingly outed the Nokia Lumia 900.

According to the video, the Lumia 900 will have a design similar to the Lumia 800, which was released in the UK last month as Nokia's first Windows Phone.

However, the smartphone will apparently feature a massive 4.3-inch screen, considerably larger than the Nokia Lumia 800's 3.7-inch display.

It is expected that the Nokia Lumia 900 will be officially announced at the CES show in early January, or at Mobile World Congress the following month.

A Nokia spokesperson refused to comment on "market rumour or speculation".
Although the company lobs the odd curveball, its releases to date, along with scrutinising subtler trends, point to the following ten things arriving from the Cupertino giant over the coming year.

1. iPad 3
You can barely swing a digital cat on the internet without nastily cracking its head on a ton of iPad 3 rumours. Reports suggest anyone wanting a higher-resolution iPad screen might be in luck, but we recommend taking rumours about major changes in form factor (such as a 7-inch iPad) with a fistful of salt. Less fanciful rumours we're hoping come true are that the device will have more storage and some kind of Thunderbolt support.

2. iPhone 5
Roughly eleven seconds after the iPhone 4S was revealed, the tech corner of the internet exploded. Steve Jobs had barely touched a 4S, claimed frenzied tech conspiracy theorists, because he was working on the iPhone 4's true successor: the iPhone 5! Right. All we really know for sure is we'll see another iPhone revision next year, and it'll almost certainly pack more power and a few new features. Beyond that, one unicorn-shaped rumour's just as shiny as another.

3. The last-ever Mac Pro
During Apple's last earnings call of 2011, it revealed that the minority of its revenue (22 per cent) comes from Macs, and of that, 74 per cent comes from notebook sales. Of the desktop sales, iMacs take the lion's share. This means, increasingly, that the Mac Pro is a luxury—a niche within a niche (desktop machines) within an area of Apple's business that's no longer its strongest (Macs). Given the power of modern iMacs and Apple's development of Thunderbolt, it's no surprise rumours have appeared about Apple questioning its tower's future (AppleInsider). We reckon it has one more update in it: 2012 will see the last new Mac Pro.

APPLE iTV?: This is the kind of Apple TV we want to see in 2012, albeit with a more powerful chip and able to output full HD quality

6. iPad to dominate
It's quite amusing watching analysts backtrack over market-share figures for the iPad. It wasn't long ago they were claiming Android tablets would (collectively) overtake the iPad during 2011. Then it would happen in 2012. Then it became a moving point in the future, at some random time before the heat death of the universe.
On the sluggishness of Android sales, Gary Marshall noted in October: "iPads sell on the basis of what you can do; Android ones are sold on the basis of what they are". Even Ice Cream Sandwich doesn't seem to be making changes there. So while the iPad's share will probably fall in 2012 (in part due to the Kindle Fire), it'll still be dominant until this time next year at the very least.

7. Bye bye, optical media and HDDs
Remember when Apple ditched the floppy drive and everyone had a huge hissy fit, bought an external USB floppy drive, and then realised that, honestly, they didn't use floppy disks all that much any more and wished they hadn't bothered? That's Apple, next year, with the rest of its notebook line—and possibly even the iMac—joining the MacBook Air and Mac mini in phasing out optical media. Also on borrowed time: HDDs. There's a shortage and Apple's been pushing flash storage across its line. Don't be surprised if the company uses every excuse it can to set flash storage as the default option in more of its machines.

NO OPTICAL: Look, ma, no optical drive! Expect more of this from Apple in 2012

8. Bigger Mac App Store names
With Lion and Snow Leopard, Mac users now have a Mac App Store icon in the dock and are being trained, like iOS users, to go shopping for new apps. For new users, this will become second-nature; buying boxed copies or software from websites won't. Increasingly, to succeed, you'll need to have your app on the Mac App Store—and there are currently some notable products that are absent. Expect some of them to appear over the next year, including a version of Microsoft Office and perhaps some pro-level Adobe apps.

9. Death of the iPod Classic
Frankly, we're surprised the iPod Classic—the 'truck' of the line—survives, but we can't imagine its luck's going to continue for another twelve months. The device looks long-in-the-tooth when up against Apple's iOS line-up, and there are reasons to expect its disappearance: worldwide hard-drive shortages that could impact on Apple's bottom line; Apple's shift to the cloud regarding music; and its increasing focus on iOS. All it needs is for a drop in flash memory prices along with a swift update to the high-end iPod touch and the iPod Classic will be history.

FINAL CLASSIC: Party like it's whatever year it was before iOS devices arrived with this thick and chunky hard-drive iPod! Until Apple cancels it next year, natch

10. Doomsayers rebuffed (again)
We said the doomsayers would be rebuffed last year, and we were right. Apple had many sales successes, opened new stores, and generally had a very strong year.
Still, 2012 will be different, according to some pundits. Steve Jobs is gone. Android is kicking bottom in smartphone market-share (even if iOS is sucking up most of the profits, like some kind of giant money vacuum cleaner).
Fifty million new Android tablets are due out, and at least one of them will be that ever-elusive 'iPad killer'. And there's the possibility Jony Ive will go nuts, make an iPod made from bees, leading to Beegate and Apple being sued into oblivion by animal welfare groups.
Or perhaps what's undoubtedly our easiest prediction will come to pass: Apple, in 2012, will enjoy another successful year, selling tons of kit, occasionally confounding expectations, and almost certainly not making any iOS devices likely to sting your face off.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2518968144857597410.post-69545207036308577882011-12-13T10:06:00.000-08:002011-12-13T10:06:36.823-08:00Alienware launches 'world's most advanced gaming PC'

Six-core Intel CPU and dual graphics
We're sure you can think of loads of examples: The Godfather Part 2, The Empire Strikes Back, Santa Buddies... okay, maybe not Santa Buddies.
This week it's the tech industry's turn to catch a does of sequelitis - but which products are Toy Story 2 and which ones have taken a great idea and added Jar Jar Binks?
The Asus Transformer Prime is definitely in the good-sequel category, and not just because it's nicked its name from the famous robotic bash-em-up.
The world's first quad-core Android tablet rocks Nvidia's Tegra 3, and we think it's outstanding. The new processor came in for particular praise: it's "fast and nimble, pumping new life into apps we've used for the past nine months and speeding up the operating system overall".
It's not the best tablet in the world - "the iPad 2 still has that honour" - but it's definitely up there along with another sequel, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Our list of the best Android tablets gets more impressive by the day, so where does the Motorola Xoom 2 fit in? If you guessed "number six" you'd be right, because as we discovered in our in-depth review, we have a few concerns.
There are some build quality issues, such as "the way the Xoom 2 rattles when the loudspeaker is high", and the screen is "a horrendous fingerprint/grease magnet". The keyboard "is a weak spot", and "the lack of a microSD card is perplexing".
Remember we're talking about a premium device with a premium price here, and on that basis it's "an improvement over the original Xoom, but not over the competition".
In cameras this week, we've seen the Canon EOS-1DX. It's the firm's latest flagship, replacing both the 1D mk IV and the 1DS mk III. Is it any cop?
Angela Nicholson reckons it's "fast and furious" and "a truly fantastic camera", but there are "fundamental questions about the concept [for] existing EOS-1 series users". Jeff Morgan agrees, arguing that restricted autofocus "cannot be considered an advantage to any photographer" and that "nature and some sports photographers are not feeling Canon's love with the announcement of the 1DX".
Canon isn't the only firm showing off shiny new snappers: Panasonic's got a new Lumix too, the Lumix DMC-GX1. Josie Reavely reckons it's "an exciting new direction for Panasonic" and "a premium option that advanced enthusiasts should definitely consider".

Yet another memory card
We haven't just seen sequels to familiar kit: we're seeing sequels to familiar components, too. Just when you thought the world could manage without yet another memory card format, the CompactFlash Association has announced yet another memory card format.
XQD is slightly bigger than an SD card and offers very fast write speeds - 125MB/sec or higher - but it's a different size from existing SD and CF cards. Nikon and Canon are both on board, and the Association intends to begin licensing the technology to card manufacturers in early 2012.
We've left the best sequel to last: it's Return of the Son of TechRadar Part 2, or TechRadar Mobile as we prefer to call it. As Marc Chacksfield explains:
"Now, when you visit TechRadar from a mobile device you will be transported to a brilliant new mobile-optimised version of the site... If you are reading this on a mobile, then you should already be browsing the new mobile-friendly version of the site. This paragraph is of no use to you... un-read it now."
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2518968144857597410.post-18606082751131182742011-11-21T08:05:00.000-08:002011-11-21T08:32:09.498-08:00''iPhone 4S'' vs ''Samsung Galaxy Nexus'' vs ''Nokia Lumia 800''

3 Giant Cell Phones for 2012

This handsome young outsider's shield is decorated with an 8-megapixel camera, and Mango -- the latest edition of Windows Phone. Can the Lumia 800's attractive design win back its family's lost honour?
Which of these phones deserves to sit on the throne, and which should end up spiked on a castle wall? Let's pit them against each other to find out. For when you play the game of phones, you win, or you die...

Ease of use
What use is a great new phone if you can't figure out how to use the blasted thing? None, that's what. Luckily, none of these mobiles are navigational nightmares. But some are still winners.
The iPhone 4S is running iOS 5, which almost everyone on the planet knows how to use, thanks to those ubiquitous Apple TV ads that show you how it works. Apps are tiled in neat grids of 16 on homescreens, and you swipe between these, tapping on apps you want to open. Double-tapping the 4S' home button brings up a taskbar that shows you all the apps you've got running so you can quickly hop between them.
And that's about it. Utterly simple, and attractive to boot. But it's not perfect -- moving between the apps you've got running often takes longer than it should, and diving into the settings feels like rappelling down into the seventh circle of Hell. Why are almost all the options you need hidden in the cryptic General tab? And why does it take so long to do something as simple as change Wi-Fi network?

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus has the 4S beat in many areas -- its Ice Cream Sandwich software looks to make Android much more usable, packing features like a persistent on-screen button that stacks all the apps you've got running across the screen. You can swipe up or down to see all of them, and swipe to the side on individual app windows to dismiss that app. It's a better way of handling multi-tasking.
But in other areas Android is still harder to use than rival operating systems. Google's robot-powered platform grants you immense freedom, but the price of that freedom is that you will find occasionally find yourself buried in a labyrinthine menu system, navigating subfolders within your phone's microSD card.
For pure eye-friendly ease-of-use, the Nokia Lumia 800 wins out, thanks to Windows Phone Mango. This operating system looks the business, sporting colourful tiles sewn together on a single homescreen, and impressive Facebook and Twitter integration. Each tile on the homescreen represents an individual app, and many of them fizz with activity, with live updates keeping you in the loop without you having to tire yourself out pressing anything.

Dive deeper into the menu system and you'll get more options, but it rarely gets more complicated to find your way around, with gorgeous menu transitions keeping your eyes happy throughout. We also like the ability to sort contacts into groups and pin those groups to the homescreen -- handy for keeping an eye on groups of friends and group messaging.
It's very simple. That simplicity might put you off if you love having a tonne of options at your disposal, but we think Windows Phone offers a great user interface that's easy to get to grips with.
Ease of use victor: Nokia Lumia 800

Apps
Windows Phone might deliver when it comes to a clear, intuitive interface, but when it comes to apps, the most you're likely to find in the Marketplace is a solitary tumbleweed, playing Doodle Jump on its iPhone.
There just aren't very many desirable apps and games on Windows Phone yet, with developers preferring to build apps for iOS and Android, where successful apps can earn their creators big money. As such, if you're really into downloadable goodies, the Nokia Lumia 800 isn't the best phone to go for.
The Galaxy Nexus fares better because there are loads of apps for Ice Cream Sandwich. Thousands of the blighters in fact, and many of them are free. But it can be difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff.
Because Google doesn't force apps through an approval process, there's an overwhelming amount of rubbish floating about on the Android Market, and its hard to find the nuggets of pure metal in among the dross. The default Market app doesn't help matters, because it's often confusing, and hard to see which apps are worth bothering with.
There's also a serious dearth of decent games on the Android Market. So while the Samsung Galaxy Nexus offers loads of apps, it's not the best choice if you're seriously addicted to apps.

The iPhone 4S wins this round -- while it has its flaws, it's easily the best operating system for apps. There are thousands of great apps, including loads of beautifully-presented, addictive games. Prices are reasonable, purchasing and installing is dead simple and the App Store app is dead easy to use.
App quality across iOS is generally high as well, thanks to Apple's strict approval process. That means you'll miss out on fun apps of somewhat dubious legality (such as game emulators) that are on Android, but we think for most people the sheer quality on offer more than outweighs this inconvenience. But that leads us to...
Apps victor: iPhone 4S

Freedom and general tinkering
The iPhone 4S might dominate in the apps stakes, but if you're a true geek who likes to take your gadgets apart to see what makes them tick, it'll leave you cold. Unless you want to jailbreak your phone, you'll have to play by Apple's rules. And that means only playing with Apple-approved apps and minimal customisation.
That's fine for some, but we know there are hundreds of gadgeteers out there who won't rest until they've forced their phone to make popcorn, change the TV channel and deliver soothing backrubs, all while running 17 operating systems and ordering pizza. If you're titillated by tinkering, the iPhone 4S will leave you, er, un-titillated.
Sadly Windows Phone is much the same. We mentioned above how easy it is to use, but the flipside of that ease of use is that your options are limited if you want to stray from the path Microsoft has laid out for you. As such, the Nokia Lumia 800 will frustrate those who like to muck about with their mobiles.

Android, on the other hand, offers all this in spades. Frustrated by the default keyboard? Download another one, there's loads to choose from. Want to funky up your homescreen? Download Launcher Pro. Want to play old-school games with a PS3 controller? Tricky, but certainly possible. This category is a no-brainer.
Tinkering victor: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hardware
While the major difference between these three blowers is the operating system that powers them, it wouldn't be fair not to mention the hardware in question.
The iPhone 4S offers speed that far outstrips its predecessor, thanks to an A5 chip that's performed very well in our benchmark tests. We're also incredibly impressed with the 8-megapixel camera, which easily outpaced the Nokia Lumia 800 in our camera test, and shoots 1080p video to boot.
The 3.5-inch screen is the same panel you'd find on the old iPhone 4, but looks absolutely stunning nonetheless -- extremely crisp and sharp.
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus, meanwhile, has a lower-resolution camera than either of its competitors, offering up a measly 5-megapixels. It feels very snappy though, thanks to a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and it has a big, beautiful 4.65-inch screen that boasts a stonking 720x1,280-pixel resolution.
Unlike many leading Android phones, the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have expandable storage -- you're stuck with the 16GB or 32GB of internal storage. That doesn't disadvantage it in this comparison, however, as neither of its competitors have a microSD slot either. The Lumia 800 has 16GB of storage, while the iPhone 4S offers 16GB, 32GB or 64GB, depending how much you pay.

The Nokia Lumia 800 has an 8-megapixel camera, though as we mentioned before it doesn't look like it's going to beat the snapper on the iPhone 4S, or other great mobiles such as the Samsung Galaxy S2. Still, a 1.4GHz processor and a screen with a very impressive viewing angle make this a decent bit of kit.
Choosing the best of these three phones in terms of hardware is tricky -- they each have their strengths and weaknesses. We're calling it a draw.
Hardware victor: Draw

Conclusion
Three brave phones enter the tournament, but which is still in the saddle?
The Nokia Lumia 800 might have a pretty face, and we're big fans of Windows Phone, but we can't recommend it yet when it's so bereft of apps. We hereby decree that the Lumia 800 be stripped of lands and titles. If it gets more apps to its name we might reconsider, but for now it must be banished.
Which leaves us with the iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and wouldn't you know, it's an impossible choice. If you're a prolific downloader of music and apps, the iPhone 4S is the clear option.
But not everyone is so keen on apps -- for some people the freedom to experiment with their gadgets is more valuable. The Galaxy Nexus provides those thrills in spades, and the improvements in Ice Cream Sandwich look set to somewhat demystify the oft-baffling Android interface.
There's nothing in it -- to choose between these two mobiles you must look not to respectable technology websites staffed by handsome writers, but to your own heart.
Overall victor: Joint winners -- iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Is our judgement fair? Should the Lumia 800 have won, or is the Galaxy Nexus a million times better than anything else out there? Inform us in the comments below, or on our Facebook page.
It's a bird, it's a plane, nope, it's Liquid Robotic's four Wave Gliders on a mission to snag the Guinness World Record for longest distance traveled on Earth by an automaton. Setting out today from the San Francisco Bay, the autonomous sea-faring crafts will travel far and wide to gather data about the world's oceans. Powered by the water's movement, the vessels are fuel-free, using "flapping" wings to move forward without human command. Tricked out with various solar-powered sensors, the robots can capture location, weather, temperature, wave height, barometric pressure and more throughout their travels. The 198.4 pound machines cost between $250,000 and $500,000 each depending on how many sensors are built-in -- a small price for scientists or commandeering pirates hoping to learn more about the 95 percent of ocean that has yet to be explored. Let's just hope they don't run into one of these guys.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2518968144857597410.post-59321403052882398452011-11-19T08:37:00.000-08:002011-11-19T08:37:51.044-08:00The AOC Aire Pro: a 23-inch IPS monitor for $199

If your battalion of bargain-hunting web bots is doing its job properly, then you should already have been alerted to AOC's new sub-$200 IPS monitor. For many hardcore gamers, it wasn't so hard to say goodbye to the Big N's purple box of yesteryear. But for those of us who stuck by Nintendo's side in 2001 and embraced the quirky StarCube GameCube, today's 10th anniversary is all too bittersweet. Sure, the house that Mario built may have misfired when it slapped the wrong coat of paint on an otherwise competent chunk of hardware, yet let us not overlook the legacy of top-tier, first-party titles that led us bleary-eyed into the wee hours of the morning. Who could forget that first mischievous sacrifice, when you willfully slung a gaggle of Pikmin into the eager mouth of a Bulbor? Or the time you thought your TV was possessed when those insanity effects from Eternal Darkness kicked in? Surely, we have this 6th generation console to thank for Samus Aran's second act. So, the next time you gaze upon your dust-collecting Wii, think admirably of the machine that came before it. Think appreciatively of the machine that lives still inside it.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2518968144857597410.post-57060439839256585092011-11-19T08:26:00.000-08:002011-11-19T08:26:06.753-08:00Google Swiffy extension exports Flash to HTML5, ActionScript fans rejoice

If you were bummed that you'd have to pick up some new coding skills when Adobe announced that Flash for mobile was finito, cheer up friends. Harken back to the summer months when Google unveiled its Swiffy conversion tool that turns those aging SWF files into browser friendly HTML5 animations. Now the folks in Mountain View have created an extension for the Flash desktop app that allows you to export your working files to something a little more up to date with a single click -- or a combination of keystrokes for you pros. So if you're worried you'd have to brush up on your coding wizardry, it seems you're safe... for now. If you're sporting Flash CS4 or newer, hit that source link to download the goods.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
